Lulea to grow with Malmporten

The Swedish Land and Environmental Court has given its green light for executing the Malmporten (Ore Gateway) project in the Port of Luleå.

The SEK 3.0+ bln (approx. EUR 310+ mln) worth project will encompass dredging (20 mln m3) the port's fairway in order to accommodate during the summer period 15 m of draft 160 thou. cargo capacity Baltimax vessels instead of today's 55 thou, as well as setting up the three new quays Skvampens deep-sea harbour by the means of sea land reclamation. In addition, the port will gain a  new rail line.

The Malmporten project will be jointly carried out by the Swedish Maritime Administration and the Port of Luleå, the former responsible for dredging, while the latter for constructing the new port infrastructure.

According to the Land and Environmental Court, the project's works should be completed within a time of 10 years.

Luleå's Ore Gateway will make it possible to adjust the port's handling capacity in line with the extraction pace of Swedish and Finnish ore fields, as well as to relieve the so-called Ore Railway that links Luleå with the Norwegian Port of Narvik through which the bulk of northern Nordics ore output is shipped out as of today, but which is currently heavily loaded.
