Japanese buy Wärtsilä's scrubbers

The Finnish corporation has been contracted by the Tokyo-based NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers for the delivery of scrubber systems for its two brand-new bulkers.

Apart from delivering the machinery (commencing in July 2018), Wärtsilä will provide project management and commissioning of its systems on-board NYK's 56,000 dwt handymax bulk carriers.

These will be the first vessels owned or chartered by the NYK Group to have scrubbers in preparation for the 0.5% global sulphur cap which will enter force on January 1st, 2020. The two bulkers are to set sail in Q4 2018 and Q1 2019, respectively.

"We are pleased and proud to be the supplier of choice for these two new ships, especially as it gives us an inroad into the Japanese market for exhaust gas cleaning solutions," Sigurd Jenssen, Director, Exhaust Gas Cleaning, Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, said.
