Baltic Transport 2013 highlights - New concept for high speed ferry service

Mols-Linien finalized investment in catamarans taking trucks.

In April 2013, Mols-Linien’s brand-new fast catamaran ended its journey from the Incat shipyard in Tasmania to its owner in Aarhus.

Now Mols-Linien has three fast catamarans in its portfolio – KatExpresses 1 & 2 as well as the smaller one Max Mols, serving the routes Odden-Aarhus and Odden-Ebeltoft. KatExpresses 1 & 2 are the largest fast catamarans in regular ro-ro & ferry traffic in Continental Europe.

Mols-Linien is pursuing its strategy of offering high speed travels both for passengers as well as for freight as a direct competition against the nearby bridge. The new catamarans mean more GT but lower fuel consumption.

While others set aside such vessels, Mols-Linien is placing a “scale effect” bet on them (the new catamarans are 2.5 times bigger than the ships withdrew). In 2013, Mols-Linien’s fleet renewal is the boldest move on the Baltic ferry market.

KatExpress 2 offers room for 1,000 passengers as well as space for pax cars, trucks and buses. The catamaran is 112.6 m long and can speed up to 36 knots (fully loaded). The vessel began its service in May.
