Baltic Transport 2013 highlights - World's biggest container ships on the 'Baltic loop'

Maersk Line put Triple-E vessels on ‘AE-10’ string.

In August 2013, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller – the biggest container carrier in the world – called for the first time at three Baltic ports: Aarhus, Gdańsk and Gothenburg, underling the incising importance of the Baltic Sea region in container traffic.

During the Transport Week 2013 event in March, Maersk Line initially announced that it will deploy its largest container ships on the ‘AE-10’ rotation from August. Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller is the first vessel of an altogether 20 units series ordered at South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. All five 2013 newbuildings have been dispatched on the ‘AE-10’ string.

The Triple-E class is a family of 165,000 dwt, 400 m in length, 59 m in beam and 14.5 m in draft container vessels with 18,000 TEU of capacity, making them the biggest box ships ever deployed. The ‘AE-10’ connection covers three terminals on the Baltic Sea – the Deepwater Container Terminal Gdańsk, APM Terminals Gothenburg and APM Terminals - Cargo Service in Aarhus.

The term “Triple-E” stands for economy of scale, energy efficiency and environmentally improved. The ships feature a twin-skeg design with two MAN engines (32 MW each) which have a waste heat recovery system. Thanks to various eco-solutions, the Triple-E container ships are designed to reach 50% lower carbon dioxide emissions in comparison to other container carriers sailing on the Asia-Europe route as well as 20% lower CO2 pollution than E-Class units, up-to-date the company’s largest ships.
