BTJ 2/17 - Focus: Cruise industry

Bigger ships with more passengers on-board. In the Baltic, these two factors have been pushing up the cruise industry incessantly.

Naturally, the business sometimes takes a small step back; however, only to leap even further in the next season.

Over the course of this century this trend has translated into an annual growth rate of 10% on average, levelling the number of cruise passenger visits from around one million in 2000 to 4.12 mln last year.

Bigger is better (but not for all), by Marek Błuś

The 2/2017 issue of Baltic Transport Journal in the Focus section features also:

  • Another peak. The European cruise market in 2016, by Catherine Couplan, Vice President Public Relations at Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Europe

The past decade has witnessed a newly revived European holiday trend in cruising, characterized by a wealthier spectrum of destinations to visit, a wider choice in cruising activities, as well as more luxurious accommodation on-board bigger ships reaching European shores. As a result, the market grew by 50% over the past 10 years, and having increased by 3.4% year-on-year, it reached a new all-time high of nearly 6.7 mln last year.

  • Enjoy your cruise (but don't take a deep breath). Extreme air pollution levels found on-deck of cruise ships, by Daniel Rieger, Transport Policy Officer at NABU

The German environmental NGO Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) found its criticism confirmed when the latest air testing on-board cruise ships unveiled high loads of air pollution on deck, over 250 times higher than under natural conditions.
