BTJ 3-4/17 - Bridge(s) over calm waters. The Baltic ro-ro & ferry and container markets in 2011-2016

North Europe resembles to a certain degree an archipelago with "islands," like...

... Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and the Netherlands, mostly trading with each other.

They're connected via "bridges," be them regular ro-ro and ro-pax or feeder services.

The very first of them - a rail ferry - was set up in 1892 between Helsingør and Helsingborg.

Over a century later the sea bridge idea is still alive and kicking, the Baltic Sea being a very "unitised" region in this regard, with a diminishing, yet still fair share of break-bulk in the overall general cargo landscape.
