Larger cruise ships can now call at Malmö

The Swedish Maritime Administration has granted permission to the Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) to serve longer cruise vessels.

Following successful simulations performed by CMP last autumn (18 dockings under different weather conditions), cruise ships up to 300 m long can berth at Malmö's Frihamnen (previously 240 m).

Simulations checked whether it's possible to manoeuvre a ship at 3.0 knots of speed and against a side wind of 10 metres per second without the assistance of pilot boats. However, during a ship's maiden call, the wind restriction will be 8 m/s.

"The fact that CMP has been given the go-ahead from the Swedish Maritime Administration to receive ships of up to 300 m creates entirely new conditions for the cruise operation here in Malmö. It is an important decision both for us and for the City of Malmö, as larger ships bring with them more people. We already have 10 arrivals booked for the 2018 cruise season, which represents over ten thousand passengers," Arnt Møller Pedersen, CMP's Head of Cruise Traffic, said.
