BTJ 5/16 - Focus: European rail & road developments

Efficient cargo transports are essential for keeping any economy in the world expanding and alive.

In the European Union, rail freight is an important part of market development strategies.

The creation of a truly internal rail market, particularly for cargo traffic has been indicated by the European Parliament and the Council as vital in progressing towards sustainable mobility.

Europe’s Rail Freight Corridors, by Radosław Pacewicz

The 5/2016 issue of Baltic Transport Journal in the Focus section features also:

  • Policy off the rails. The condition of rail freight transport in the EU, by Maciej Kniter

This year’s report Rail freight transport in the EU: Still not on the right track produced by the European Court of Auditors on the condition of railway transport in the EU stresses that the goal of increasing its share in the overall transportation volume has not been met. Trucking is still a lot more flexible and competitive, hence preferred by customers, despite billions of euros injected in rail development (EUR 28 bln just in the years 2007-2013).

  • In a common effort to reduce CO2. Joining forces to tackle the road transport CO2 challenge. A multi-stakeholder initiative, by Bartosz Dąbrowski

On the eve of further tightening CO2 emission targets by the European Union, and with increasing awareness among vehicle users of the necessity to reduce carbon dioxide emission, the time is perfect to ask some key questions. Two of them stand out: Are we ready to successfully cut CO2 emissions by vehicles, and do we have the necessary means to implement it now? In practice it might not be as simple as that, but we already have a variety of green options to choose from.
