BTJ 6/16 - A cleaner sea breeze. Emissions from Baltic Sea shipping in 2015
Publication date: 2017-02-06
Undoubtedly, one of the world's busiest shipping routes can be found in the Baltic Sea.
In 2015, out of over 21,000 vessels plying in the region, nearly 8,500 had an International Maritime Organization (IMO) registry number, a good indication of the busyness of commercial marine traffic in the Baltic.
But what keeps the economy buoyant can at the same time have a negative effect on air and water quality.
The European Commission’s Clean Air for Europe (CAFE) programme projects that by 2020 NOx and SOx emissions from international shipping in Europe will surpass those from all land-based sources in the 25 EU Member States with a coastline combined.
