The steamer Karlshamn depicted in the centre of the postcard (just issued in Gdańsk) was built in 1871 and after 1881 was registered in Karlskrona.

P. H. Wolff, the owner of the ship, created the quarry industry in the region of Blekinge.

Wolff's three ships delivered stones from piers located around their mother port to customers mainly from the southern coasts of the Baltic.

Streets in many harbour towns across Baltic Germany and Poland are paved with cobbles hewed in Wolff’s quarries. If living in Rostock or Gdańsk, you are probably walking on Swedish soil (although today typically covered by asphalt…).
