The European Union's white paper on transport, published back in 2011, states, among others, that in order to reduce transport-related emission of CO2, particularly over longer 300+ km hauls, cargo traffic should switch to eco-friendlier modes, like barges traversing inland waterways.
These recommendations have been incorporated into Polish strategic documents on transportation, stressing that the role of inland navigation in the country's supply chains should be more pronounced, given its unrivalled carbon efficiency.
As such, a project involving the setup of a multimodal platform on the Lower Vistula River has been initiated.
