Decided - the Baltic Sea to become part of NECA

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has designated the Baltic and North Seas, together with the English Channel, to form a Nitrogen Emission Control Area.

The new and more stringent levels concerning nitrogen oxide emissions from sea shipping will take effect on January 1st, 2021. The new requirements will see new as-of-2021-built ships emitting approx. 80% fewer nitrogen oxides in comparison to the current state of affairs.

According to HELCOM estimates, making the Baltic a NECA could result in cutting the nitrogen input into the sea by approx. 7,000 tn/year.

The NECA decision was agreed upon during the 71st session of IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) that took place between July 3rd and 7th, along with other resolutions, such as on ballast water management, greenhouse gases and air pollution, as well as on implementing the 0.5% global sulphur limit.
