Kronprins Frederik to serve as a freight ferry

Following proper ship modifications, Scandlines has deployed the 700 lane metres Kronprins Frederik on the Puttgarden-Rødby route as a freight ferry.

In February this year, Kronprins Frederik was docked at the Navikon ship and offshore yard in Świnoujście, where the vessel gained two new 12 m long aft ramps in order for it to berth in Puttgarden, as well as new and larger fender lists at its front to call at Rødby. Additionally, 12 tn of steel were replaced in the water ballast tank.

In the Port of Puttgarden, Scandlines had two dredging ships remove approx. 70 thou. m3 of sand for the ferry to sail into the harbour.

The total cost of these ship-port modifications amounted to EUR 3.5 mln.

The Puttgarden-Rødby link is served by the ferries Prins Richard, Deutschland, Prinsesse Benedikte, and Schleswig-Holstein. Up-to-date, Kronprins Frederik sailed between Gedser and Rostock, but was lately replaced by Scandlines' newbuilds Berlin and Copenhagen.
