When TEU-converted, the German rail freight haulier carried as much as 1.97 mln 20-footers last year.

Out of the total number of trailers, swap bodies, and containers shifted by Kombiverkehr from roads onto rails in 2016, 202,927 consignments were carried in national traffic within Germany (+0.6% year-on-year), while the remaining 782,498 were made across international routes (+0.8% yoy).

According to Kombiverkehr, the environment was spared a total of 1.1 mln tn of CO2 emissions by rail-taking care of road consignments last year.

"Intermodal transports certainly had to contend with some challenges over the last 12 months, including low diesel costs, international strikes, and an extended closure of the nationally and internationally important terminal in Ludwigshafen. It is nevertheless clear that sustainable growth is still possible in national and international transport," Robert Breuhahn, Kombiverkehr's Managing Director, commented on the results.
