New ferries for the Baltiysk-Ust-Luga line

The Russian Ministry of Finance will earmark RUB 5.1 bln (approx. EUR 72 mln) for the construction and operation of three ferries on the route in question.

The money will be allocated to the draft federal budgets for the 2018-2020 period. The new ships will replace the two soon to be written-off rail ferries currently serving the cabotage link between the ports of Baltiysk and Ust-Luga.

A new company is being established to operate the route with the new vessels, too, with Russian Railways having a 25% blocking stake in it.

"This was a rather difficult but productive period of negotiations, feasibility, and arguments. For our part, we showed firmness and perseverance, and as a result we were able to agree on the necessary volume of federal funding for projects that are so necessary for our region," Anton Alikhanov, Acting Governor of the Kaliningrad Oblast, said.
