Vistula Spit to be dug through

The President of Poland has signed a special law enabling the setup of a sea canal which will link the Vistula Lagoon with the Gdańsk Bay.

Construction works of the approx. PLN 880 mln (ca. EUR 207 mln) worth canal are to start in 2018, set for completion four years later. The canal will be 1.3 km long, offering water depth of 5.0 m for seagoing vessels 100 m long, 20 m wide, and having a draught of 4.0 m.

The new infrastructure will directly connect the Polish Port of Elbląg with the Baltic Sea. Up-to-date, ships wanting to call at Elbląg have to pass the Russia-controlled Pilava Strait.
