SOL sells Finnland
Publication date: 2017-02-14
Salamis Lines has bought from the Swedish shipping company the 1982-built ro-ro ship Finnland.
Re-named as Alexo, the vessel has been put on the Lavrio-Limassol-Haifa loop in Eastern Mediterranean.
Till now, Finnland was serving the as of January 1st-closed SOL's Hanko-Rostock service, together with her sisterships Vasaland and Vikingland. Vasaland is now charter-employed for StoraEnso's shipments, whereas Vikingland has sailed for a 2017-long charter to the Mediterranean.
"The sale is an effect of closing the Hanko-Rostock line, which in turn gave us the opportunity to search for a buyer. There are no ro-ros available on the market, and it's extremely difficult to find tonnage. On the other hand, there's a lot going on in shipyards now, which will lead to a perfect storm blowing up at 2018's end. Everything currently constructed is very big, yet the ro-ro market is fairly small, so even a single ship can alter the market significantly," Ragnar Johansson, SOL's Managing Director, commented to Sjöfartstidningen.
