Delivering an autonomous maritime transport system by 2025 will rely on 'collaboration without borders' between major players from the international digital, communications, and shipping sectors across a number of fields, including regulation, testing and validation, and research and development (R&D).

As such, Digital, Internet, Materials & Engineering Co-Creation (DIMECC), a Finnish not-for-profit platform that provides administrative and other resources for the One Sea ecosystem, recently unveiled the Sea for Value (S4V) programme aimed at developing concrete research-based recommendations on regulation, business, data usage and sharing, and standardisation for autonomous ships.

As part of S4V, new technological research into the potential for remote pilotage has taken off, offering fresh evidence that an ecosystem for autonomous maritime transport envisaged by One Sea can be achieved in time to meet the alliance's ambitious target of 2025.
