The coronavirus pandemic has blackened many things, almost - almost! - casting its thick shadow over one of the most important transport anniversaries of 2020.

However, we as well as a number of other vigilant organisations, including the US and the Royal mints, and the US Postal Service, have kept the finger on the pulse.

The first two have minted coins which have a common reverse depicting the Pilgrims' ship Mayflower under full sail.

In 1620, the Mayflower plied from the Netherlands through England to America with 132 people on-board; as such, she was the first ship ever carrying over 100 private, purely civilian passengers across the North Atlantic Ocean (102 to be exact).

Other pioneering vessels on the route were usually boarded by royal clerks and soldiers, too.
