Apart from its new freight handling record, the German seaport also noted a new all-time high in passenger traffic - up by 1.6% year-on-year to a total of 2,117,389 travellers.
Out of this number, 513.5k passengers (+6% yoy) came or left on-board a cruise ship, also a new record.
During its first full year of operations, the port's Forest Products Centre handled 780kt.
Last year, a total of 225k of ro-ro cargo units (incl. new vehicles) were handled in Kiel's ferry traffic, noting an increase by 5.4% yoy. Some 200k pax cars drove on/off a ferry (+5.1% yoy), too, while the port's container traffic rose as well - by 14.5% yoy to 28k boxes.
Kiel's rail terminals took care of 32,104 trailers and containers last year (+9.5% yoy), setting yet another record.
