The City of Grenaa on the Danish coast has been housing a unique statue since 1949.

The man standing on the platform is Søren Kanne, who in 1835 rescued the skipper Ole Jensen Jyde.

On February 15th, the ship Benthe Marie ran aground some 50 metres of Grenaa. Out of its three crew members, one drowned, another made its way to the shore, but Ole Jensen Jyde was left behind tightly holding onto the wreck. 

Søren rushed to the rescue with two horses, dashed into the sea, and brought Benthe Marie's skipper onto land. King Frederick VI of Denmark rewarded Kanne for his courage by presenting a medal to him.

Ironically, our hero drowned in 1860. Nevertheless, the citizens of Grenaa, as well as miscellany gatherers, still remember his courageous deed.
