Tonnage-wise, containerised freight going over Tallinn's quays amounted to 506 thousand tonnes over January-March 2024 (+8.2% year-on-year).
Overall, the Estonian port's Q1 cargo turnover this year was flat at 3,364kt. Apart from freight in containers, the seaport also handled 1,666kt of wheeled (ro-ro & ferry) cargo (-3.7% yoy), 720kt of dry bulk (+36.8% yoy), 336kt of liquids (-34.7% yoy), 132kt of break-bulk (+26.7% yoy), and 4.0kt of non-marine goods (-81.8% yoy).
Tallinn's passenger traffic was up 4.9% on the Q1 2023 figure, totalling 1,465k ferry travellers. The Tallinn-Helsinki service attracted 1,317k passengers (+4.8% yoy), followed by 99k to/from Stockholm (-2.9% yoy), 41k between Muuga and Vuosaari (+50.7% yoy), and 9.0k classified as 'others' (-22.4% yoy). There was no cruise traffic in the first three months.
At the same time, the Port of Tallinn's domestic ferry traffic subsidiary, TS Laevad, transported 372k passengers (+6.1% yoy) and 191k vehicles (+5.7% yoy).
"The number of passengers continued to grow as expected, and this in a situation where some of the passenger ships were off the line due to planned dock works. As for cargo, we can see several cargo types that exceeded the volumes of the comparison period, among other things, the volumes of containers are increasing again," Valdo Kalm, CEO of the Port of Tallinn, commented on the outcome of Q1 2024.
