The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) entered into force on 25 May. By introducing a new standard of data protection, it was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across the European Union.
However, this legal instrument has an extraterritorial effect and as such also concerns foreign companies operating within the EU or process data of its citizens.
Beyond doubt, maritime companies will be affected by the GDPR as they deal with large volumes of personal data, including on employees, business contacts, passengers, vessel crews, contractors, etc. The Regulation also entails stricter rules and higher fines.
