It's probably safe to assume that during the 26 June 2016 referendum on whether to stay in or leave the EU, as well as the heated debate prior to it, the man on the Clapham omnibus did not go to the trouble of scrutinizing how exactly the customs procedures would look like if the UK decided to file for divorce.
Once 51.89% of the voters said "Nay," it became clear that the "border issue" will land on the negotiating table.
As we're nearing March 2019, at which end the UK will officially cease to be an EU Member State, the way customs will function after that date is an increasingly burning question for all those trading with the UK, all the more because nobody, it seems, really knows the terms of the future UK-EU cooperation.
