On 1 September, over 1,000 people from more than 50 countries gathered in Taipei to celebrate the setup of the company. The birthday party was inaugurated with the performance of the choir of the Yihsing branch of the Jiahsing Elementary School from the Hsinchu County (which received a gold medal at the 31st Franz Schubert Choir Competition in Vienna this June).

In the early years, the Evergreen Marine Corporation, created by Dr Y.F. Chang, encountered numerous hurdles, such as the fire that ravaged Ever Island, a lack of lending support from financial institutions, and competitive monopoly of freight conferences.

The company endured and in 1972 launched Taiwan's first Far East-Middle East liner service. In 1979, it opened the Far East-to-Europe full container service as an independent carrier, breaking the monopoly of the Far Eastern Freight Conference.

In 1984, Evergreen kicked off two-way, round-the-world container services, which led to establishing it as the world's largest container shipping line in 1985 (today's 7th with almost 1.2m-big TEU fleet).

The Group is nowadays also active across numerous other industries, incl. aviation, hotel, and steel production.
