The Ports 4.0 conference, organised by the Baltic Ports Organization and hosted by the Port of Riga at the beginning of March, was one of the very last industry events that came to fruition (though with several participants scratching their attendance at the eleventh hour) before the coronavirus pandemic wiped out other meetings in a manner of weeks, if not days.
After returning home from the Latvian capital, many of us had to, willingly or not, embrace the digital revolution by shaking hands with remote work.
However, digitalising the port business is much more than Zooming in on your co-workers through webcams.
While we'll hopefully adjust and ultimately overcome the virus, the Industry 4.0-type-of-work-operations-processes-and-employment is here to stay with us.
