With the help of the project partners Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and ClassNK, K Line has successfully tested a demonstration plant for carbon dioxide capture installed on the coal carrier Corona Utility.
The Japanese shipping company says it has been able to catch and store CO2 with a purity level of more than 99.9%.
"As the world's first marine demonstration test, the project will provide invaluable insights into facilities design and technologies for capturing CO2 emissions and achieving zero emissions onboard vessels. Additionally, the captured CO2 is expected to be recycled as a new CO2 source for Enhanced Oil Recovery [...] processes or as raw material in synthetic fuel through methanation," K Line shared in a press release from August 2020 when it revealed the CC-Ocean Project.
