As of September this year, the container ships Arnarfell and Helgafell will call at the Swedish seaport on a weekly basis, bringing fish and seafood while taking food products, construction materials, and vehicles to the Icelandic market.
The service is expected to generate approximately 250 containers per week. The current loop links the ports of Aarhus, Gothenburg, and Immingham with Reykjavík, Grundartangi, Ísafjörður, Sauðárkrókur, Akureyri, Vestmannaeyjar, and Vopnafjörður in Iceland, as well as Runavík on the Faroe Islands.
"This agreement is strategically important for the Ports of Halland. We are strengthening our container segments while improving the utilization of existing resources. Our extensive infrastructure investments, including an intermodal terminal and high accessibility, have been key in enabling us to offer Samskip a strong alternative on the market," commented Henrik Nanfeldt, the Ports of Halland's Deputy CEO and Chief Commercial Officer.
Birkir Hólm Guðnason, CEO of Samskip Iceland, also said, "The connection to Halmstad further strengthens Samskip's transport network and provides customers with increased flexibility and more options into the Nordic region. For us, this is not only about adding a new port, but about improving accessibility, enhancing operational reliability, and creating a more efficient flow of goods to and from Iceland. This is an important step in the continued development of Samskip's strong and resilient network."
