The 42 ha-big Kouvola Rail and Road Terminal, located in southeastern Finland, will be completed in 2022 and open the following year.
The terminal's platforms have already been set up. Two new broad-gauge tracks, each 1,100 m in length, will be placed in 2022.
Next year, in spring, asphalting will take place, too, said to be Finland's biggest (370k m2). Old asphalt from a nearby highway will be used to lower the construction works' environmental impact.
During the set-up of Kouvola RRT, concrete from demolished buildings was also used for building roads in the area. At the same time, all the aggregate needed for the project was obtained from the construction site.
The RRT's entire construction and design area is 170 ha, to be developed in stages.
Erecting the intermodal terminal will cost €39.8m.
Kouvola is part of EU TEN-T's Core Network, and the existing rail infrastructure already handles Finland's and transit New Silk Road traffic.
