Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Fassmer (Berne) and Meyer (Papenburg) shipyards will jointly construct Meteor IV.
The approx. GT 10k ship will be 125 m long, offering accommodation for 35 scientists (in addition to 36 crew members).
Meteor IV's delivery is expected in 2026. She will replace the already decommissioned Poseidon and the still operational Meteor. Briese Schiffahrts will be the operator of Meteor IV.
In its press release, Fassmer underlined that the newbuild "[...] is designed for worldwide multifunctional and interdisciplinary research, with a focus on the Atlantic."
The company also said, "The new vessel will make an important contribution to national and international marine research, particularly in the areas of climate and environmental research."
