The Dutch Ferus Smit has been entrusted with delivering two 6,380 dwt dry bulk carriers, the first to be handed over in spring 2022, while the other one year later.
The 1A ice-class newbuilds will be equipped with machinery for connecting to an onshore power supply (both 50 and 60 Hz) for zero-emission at berth, plus heat recovery and LED lighting for reducing onboard energy consumption.
The two will feature a frequency converter, making it possible to run the main engine on a variable RPM depending on the load while at the same time still supplying the electrical AC demand with the shaft generator.
"We are looking forward to the next generation of vessels providing our clients with sustainable and smart solutions, delivering the cargo on time with the best environmental performance possible for the time being," Jens Bäckström, Senior Charterer at Erik Thun, commented.
Henrik Källsson, Erik Thun Group's Deputy Managing Director, added, "In Erik Thun, we have always had a high focus on resource efficiency translating into modern environmental care. It is a challenge to build vessels fit for the future, but our long experience gives us a good basis for continual improvement and innovative design."
