Alfa Laval and SSAB have partnered to develop and commercialise plate heat exchangers that will be made using the latter's HYBRIT fossil-free steel-making technology.
The two plan to have the first unit made with hydrogen-reduced steel ready for 2023.
HYBRIT was created in 2016 by SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall. The joint-venture project aims at replacing cooking coal with hydrogen.
The first test delivery of HYBRIT steel took place in August 2022. The following month, the parties started operating a pilot rock cavern fossil-free hydrogen gas storage facility in Luleå (100 m3).
