The Finnish manufacturer of port cargo handling equipment will deliver 21 straddle carriers to APM Terminals Barcelona (APMT), including four battery and 17 hybrid versions.
The battery Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers, which will come with two automated charging stations, can handle containers 1-over-3 high with twin-lift capability and will be delivered in Q3 2024.
The hybrid machinery can also twin-lift, stacking 1-over-3, and will be delivered at the end of this year through early 2024.
The new equipment will help APMT achieve its target of reducing carbon emissions by 70% by 2030, towards next-zero a decade later.
"We are excited to team up with Konecranes for battery-powered straddle carriers as a big step towards decarbonizing our industry. Having a partner like Konecranes and collaborating in a battery-powered straddle carrier pilot is what we need to reach our net zero goal," said Jelle Burger, APMT Program Lead Electrification Pilots.
Hubert Foltys, Director Business Line Straddle Carriers, Konecranes, added, "The high-performance, reliable, low-emission and zero-tailpipe-emission container handling equipment that APMT has ordered from Konecranes will contribute significantly to achieving their decarbonization targets. We're especially proud to have APMT as the first company globally to order battery-powered Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers, and we look forward to working with APMT as we move the container handling industry towards decarbonization."
His company also underscored in a press release, "This order is part of Ecolifting, Konecranes' continuous work to decrease the carbon footprints of our customers. From eco-optimizing diesel drives to hybridization and fully electrified fleets, we will continue to do more with less."
