The company has leased a silo from Benders Sverige in the Swedish port for storing merit, a slag-binder used in cement production.
Merit, said to have a lesser impact on the environment than traditional binders, will be transported by ship from Swecem's plant in Oxelösund instead of by trucks to further cut the carbon footprint.
Ludwig Zetterström, Swecem's CEO, said:
It feels terrific to grow our business by opening a new terminal, thanks to which we'll shorten transportation and facilitate deliveries in many parts of the country. To supply our clients in a more effective and environmentally friendlier way is a desirable complement to our otherwise comprehensive Swedish logistics network.
Mats Jakobsson, CEO of Benders Sverige, added:
Our silo investment, made to shift a significant transport volume from road to sea, is one of the biggest environmental investments we have done at Benders thus far, on par with our investment train sets, with considerable emission reductions as a result. By providing Swecem with the silo, we are now making this alternative binder more readily available, not least for use in our own production [...].
Deliveries from Swecem's Uddevalla facility will commence in Q3 2024.
