TRATOSFLEX-RTG-RF® HighVision: illuminating a safer and greener future for ports

Tratos, a leading innovator in cable manufacturing, is at the forefront of enhancing port safety and sustainability through its advanced solutions.

The company is committed to developing intelligent, value-added, and environmentally positive products aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Tratos' sustainability strategy, launched in 2019, emphasises adopting high standards that often exceed legal requirements, focusing on issues material to its business, employees, communities, and customers. This includes producing fully recyclable cables made with respect for environmental standards and using clean, renewable energy from its own hydroelectric plant since 1980.

At industry events like TOC Europe in Rotterdam, Tratos showcases its commitment to port safety and sustainability. The company presents its innovative solutions, such as Alternative Marine Power Cables (AMP), designed to support the electrification and automation trends in modern ports. By participating in these exhibitions, Tratos engages with global industry experts to discuss strategies and explore the latest technologies in the port and terminal industry, reinforcing its role in driving sustainable practices and technological advancements in port operations.

In the evolving landscape of maritime logistics, ports face increasing pressure to enhance operational efficiency while also improving safety and reducing environmental impact. This is particularly evident in the electrification of RTG cranes, which account for over half of a port's fuel consumption.

TRATOSFLEX-RTG-RF® HighVision: a next-generation reflective & fluorescent cable from Tratos that tackles these challenges head-on by combining cutting-edge engineering with transformative health and safety benefits.

Traditional diesel-powered RTGs are noisy, high-maintenance, and emit harmful pollutants that compromise both environmental and occupational health. By converting to electric power, enabled by robust, high-performance cables, ports can reduce diesel consumption by up to 95%, improving air quality for workers and surrounding communities.

Yet, electrification alone is not enough. Safety in port environments is paramount, especially where moving cranes, vehicles, and ground personnel operate in tandem, often under poor visibility conditions. Accidental contact with cables is a common cause of downtime, injury, and costly repairs.

The TRATOSFLEX-RTG-RF® HighVision cable is engineered not only for mechanical durability but also to enhance human safety - by being better seen. This is achieved through two revolutionary features:

> Reflective (R): the cable sheath integrates reflective stripes that shine brilliantly under minimal light - from vehicle headlights, floodlights, or even a mobile phone - much like a high-visibility safety vest. This ensures that the cable is always seen, reducing the risk of tripping, snagging, or vehicular accidents.

> Fluorescent (F): a patented phosphorescent compound, embedded directly in the outer sheath, glows in the dark for up to eight hours without external power. This feature ensures persistent visibility during blackouts, low-light operations, or in emergency scenarios - where awareness can mean the difference between safety and serious harm.

These features significantly reduce the incidence of accidental damage, protect operators and ground crews, and create a healthier, safer working environment.

Beyond visibility, the Tratosflex-RTG-RF® HighVision cable is designed to meet the highest performance standards:

> Medium-voltage operation and flexible EPR insulation,

> Integrated control, signalling, and bus lines for efficient data transmission,

> High torsional resistance, with optional anti-torsional protection,

> Compliance with international standards (DIN VDE 250-813, EN 60228, HD 620 S2, etc.).

Its internal construction includes a central support and earth core, inner sheath, and multi-layer protective compounds - all tailored for the dynamic stresses of reeling and unwinding during RTG operations.

At a time when ports are redefining their role in global sustainability, the Tratosflex-RTG-RF® HighVision cable represents more than just an engineering milestone. It is an active contributor to:

> Reduced workplace injuries and incidents,

> Enhanced worker visibility and health protection,

> Smoother and safer 24/7 operations,

> Lower environmental impact through electrification,

> Increased productivity and reduced maintenance costs.

By lighting the way - both literally and technologically - Tratos is driving the evolution of ports toward greater cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency. Its advanced cable systems, including shore power (AMP) solutions and high-performance crane cables, reduce environmental impact by cutting emissions and supporting electrified port operations.

Designed for resilience and intelligence, these solutions not only protect vital equipment but also enhance safety for workers on the ground. With every crane movement and powered connection, Tratos reinforces its commitment to sustainable progress, ensuring that ports operate more reliably, safely, and in harmony with environmental goals.
