From October 2026, the output from SCA's Munksund Paper Mill, which earlier was dispatched by train to Umeå for shipping, will head to the Port of Piteå.
Munksund produces around 400,000 tonnes of packaging paper per year. Together, some 550,000-600,000 tonnes of SCA products will be shipped through Piteå on board the company's ro-ros.
"The change is both environmental and economic. The ships can reduce speed from 15 to 11-12 knots and operate with a higher payload, which reduces emissions per transported tonne by approximately 40%," the Port of Piteå underscored in a press brief.
The Swedish seaport's CEO, Ulrika Nilsson, also commented, "An expanded SCA business fits well with the port's existing operations and strengthens the strategic role the Port of Piteå plays for the forest industry. This lays a solid foundation for the continued development of the seaport's operations, and it is fantastic that SCA is part of that journey."
She furthered, "I am proud of the good and solution-oriented work we have done together with ShoreLink and SCA to be able to offer an attractive and competitive logistics solution in Piteå."
Magnus Svensson, President, SCA Sourcing & Logistics, said, "Our presence in Piteå is increasing significantly, and this will of course mean an opportunity for us to further develop logistics from the municipality together with the Port of Piteå and ShoreLink."
"For us at ShoreLink, the collaboration with the Port of Piteå is a crucial part in making this investment a reality. Together with the Port of Piteå and SCA, we have created a long-term and sustainable solution that strengthens both the seaport, the industry, and the entire region," shared Peter Mörtlund, CEO, ShoreLink.
