The Danish seaport has contracted Leap Solutions, also from Denmark, to deliver a mobile system comprising two containerised battery packs and three shore power units.
The battery energy storage system (BESS) will offer 10MWh of capacity, while the onshore power supply (OPS) units will be in the 400-600V range, including one 2MW-6.6kV.
The order also includes a central energy management system and a 10kV switchgear installation in the Port of Aalborg's East Harbour, where the entire facility is set to become operational by the end of 2027.
"When a ship is berthed in Aalborg, it no longer needs to run on its auxiliary engine. But that is really only one part of the story. That same mobile battery capacity is what enables us to electrify our cranes. It also paves the way for us to replace diesel-powered port equipment with electric solutions in the future, as we become ready to do so," said Mikkel Kalmo Guldhammer, Business Development Manager at the Port of Aalborg.
He also underlined, "This isn't just a single project - it represents the infrastructure underpinning a broader electrification of the port."
Emil Krog Kruse, CEO of Leap Solutions, commented, "Ports are facing increasing demands to reduce emissions and electrify their operations. That is why we have developed a solution that combines shore power and energy storage in a flexible setup adaptable to various port environments. We are proud that the Port of Aalborg has chosen us as a partner for a project that could help set new standards for future port operations."
