The Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications has earmarked €30m to develop the Kaunas Intermodal Terminal (KIT), aiming to increase its yearly handling capacity threefold from the current 55k cargo transport units.
Together with its partners LDZ Cargo, LTG Cargo, HHLA TK Estonia, and Kaunas Intermodal Terminal, the Estonian Operail has dispatched the first Muuga-Kaunas train.
Starting from the end-March 2022, the container carrier will weekly connect the Baltic seaports of Klaipėda, Gdynia and Gothenburg and the North Sea Bremerhaven with New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk.
The Primorsk-located facility would handle fertilisers, some 11-12mt per year, with the first shipments arriving in 2023 and the construction fully completed in 2024.
