The expanded sea terminal of Wallenius Wilhelmsen (WW) in the Port of Zeebrugge has received its first shipment: almost 3.0k electric vehicles.
The first stage of the 50 ha-expansion wasn't scheduled until later in 2022, but due to increased cargo throughput and global port congestion, WW fast-tracked the construction to meet the demand.
Apart from the 50 ha big yard, the upgraded Bastenaken West, fully operational in 2027, will feature three new berthing positions.
WW wants the expansion to be climate-neutral. To that end, three wind turbines will provide electricity, including for vehicle charging points, with surplus energy fed to the grid. The vehicle processing centre will also have a water treatment facility.
