According to a brand-new design, the Ferus Smit shipyard will construct two 7,999 dwt tankers for the Swedish shipowner.
The 1A ice-class newbuilds are scheduled for delivery in 2024's first half and will serve coastal traffic in northern Europe.
The R-class tankers will feature several eco-solutions, including battery packs. They will albo be onshore power supply-ready.
"The R-class has been designed to be the most resource-efficient vessel on the market with minimal environmental impact. Thun's long-standing experience in building quality, high-performing ships has been used in the design process. We have combined it with new qualities to further improve the performance while reducing the climate impact," Joakim Lund, CCO, Thun Tankers, commented.
Johan Källsson, CEO of Erik Thun, added, "Our idea has always been to build and operate ships, focusing on the environment, sustainability and energy efficiency. We did this long before these issues made it to the global agenda. Continuous development is our aim, and the recently ordered vessels are an excellent example of that. We believe that we can make a global difference by taking responsibility and playing our part."
