The Basque seaport has received €14m in support from the EU to set up an onshore power supply (OPS) system that will cover its cruise, ferry, and container quays.
The system, linked to a photovoltaic plant, will comprise 14 OPS connection points.
The investment is expected to be ready ahead of the 2026 cruise season.
"We are delighted with this result. We are very grateful for the written support from MSC Cruises, Carnival UK, TUI Cruises and Royal Caribbean, that has helped the funding case," Gloria Frau, the port's Cruise Manager, underlined.
Earlier, the Port of Bilbao invested in its own 20 MW wind farm as well as a gas bunkering station. A hydrogen and e-fuel plant is due to follow by 2024.
