The French producer of renewable hydrogen will set up and operate an electrolyser in Tübingen to supply Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Mobility's H2goesRail project.
The facility, powered by renewables, will start operating in 2024, producing up to 30t of green hydrogen per year.
Green Hydrogen Systems will provide the electrolyser.
The commission comes from Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Mobility agreeing in autumn 2020 on building hydrogen-powered trains. Eventually, the newbuilds will replace Deutsche Bahn's fleet of 1,300 diesel trains by 2050.
"We are very proud to announce this first project in Germany, with a major partner which has very strong ambitions in terms of innovation and decarbonisation. This is proof that solutions exist. It is urgent that all the major transport players take steps to decarbonise their sectors," Mathieu Guesné, Founding President, Lhyfe, underscored.
The 2017-founded, Nantes-based Lhyfe launched its first industrial green hydrogen production site on 30 September 2021 in the French Vendée. The company has raised €70m in funding between 2019 and 2021, and its portfolio counts more than 60 projects in France and abroad.
